The VDRL (Venereal Disease Research Laboratory) test, also known as the RPR (Rapid Plasma Reagin) test, is a blood test used for the diagnosis of syphilis. Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. The VDRL/RPR test detects the presence of antibodies that the body produces in response to the infection. It measures the reactivity of these antibodies against a specific antigen.

The VDRL (Venereal Disease Research Laboratory) test or RPR (Rapid Plasma Reagin) test for syphilis is commonly used in various situations, including:

  • Routine screening: The VDRL/RPR test is often included in routine sexually transmitted infection (STI) screenings, especially for individuals who are sexually active, have multiple sexual partners, engage in high-risk sexual behaviors, or are at increased risk of contracting syphilis.
  • Symptoms of syphilis: The test may be performed when a person presents with symptoms that are consistent with syphilis, such as genital sores (chancres), skin rash, oral lesions, or other manifestations associated with syphilis infection.
  • Partner notification: If a person has been diagnosed with syphilis, their sexual partners may be advised to undergo the VDRL/RPR test to determine if they have also been infected.
  • Pregnancy screening: Syphilis screening is a routine part of prenatal care as congenital syphilis can have serious implications for the health of the baby. Pregnant individuals are often tested for syphilis during the early stages of pregnancy and sometimes again later in pregnancy.
  • High-risk populations: Certain populations, such as men who have sex with men (MSM), individuals with HIV infection, sex workers, or individuals with a history of injection drug use, may be at higher risk for syphilis. Regular testing with the VDRL/RPR test might be recommended for these populations.

No special preparation is usually required for the VDRL/RPR test. Our Blood collection technician will clean the area where they will draw the blood, usually the inside of your elbow. They will then use a sterile needle to draw a small amount of blood from your vein. The process is relatively quick and may cause mild discomfort. The blood sample is sent to our laboratory for analysis.

The VDRL/RPR test measures the reactivity of antibodies in your blood. A positive result means that antibodies were detected, indicating possible syphilis infection. However, further confirmatory tests are necessary to confirm the diagnosis. If the VDRL/RPR test is positive, your doctor will likely recommend additional confirmatory tests, such as the Treponemal test (e.g., Fluorescent Treponemal Antibody Absorption test or Treponema pallidum Particle Agglutination assay), to confirm the diagnosis of syphilis.
