Indirect Coombs Test (Indirect Antiglobulin) and its Function
The Indirect Coombs test, also known as the Indirect Antiglobulin test (IAT), is a laboratory test used to detect the presence of antibodies in the plasma or serum that can potentially cause destruction of red blood cells (RBCs). Unlike the Direct Coombs test, which detects antibodies attached to the surface of RBCs, the Indirect Coombs test detects antibodies in the liquid portion of the blood.
Conditions that may require Indirect Coombs Test (Indirect Antiglobulin)
Hemolytic Disease of the Newborn (HDN): The test is commonly performed on pregnant women to identify the presence of antibodies in their blood that could cross the placenta and cause destruction of fetal RBCs. This helps in monitoring and managing the risk of HDN.
Blood Transfusions: Before a blood transfusion, the recipient’s blood is tested with the Indirect Coombs test to identify any antibodies that may react with the donor’s blood. This ensures compatibility and reduces the risk of transfusion reactions.
Indirect Coombs Test (Indirect Antiglobulin) Procedure
The Indirect Coombs Test (Indirect Antiglobulin) is a simple blood test that can be performed in a laboratory. Before the test, the patient may be asked to avoid certain medications that may affect the results. During the test, our healthcare professional will use a needle to draw blood from a vein in the patient’s arm. The blood sample will then be sent to our laboratory for analysis.
Interpreting Indirect Coombs Test (Indirect Antiglobulin) Results
Interpreting Indirect Coombs test results involves assessing the presence or absence of antibodies in the plasma or serum. A positive result indicates the presence of antibodies that may potentially cause destruction of RBCs. The level and specificity of the antibodies can further guide the management and treatment decisions.
